Most wedding receptions will vary substantially depending on the cultural background of the family, their circumstances and what they consider is important. With that in mind, I will present a general overview of a modern wedding reception & ceremony and what it entails:
The Toastmaster – Responsibilities & Duties
Most formal wedding include a toast master in the wedding reception, as a means to, open the proceedings and keeps the theme, story and dynamic of the night flowing in a seamless positive direction.
The Toastmasters role includes:
- Introducing guest by name to the host and arranging the receiving line, and
- Asking the guest to take and seat, after they have been welcomed by the receiving line
- Announcing the general outline of the day’s events and the time-frame
- Introducing the arrival of the groom & bride, & escorting them to their places.
- Announcing the cutting of the cake, and introduces the main speakers of the night to give their speeches (e.g. the grooms wedding speech).
What is the Purpose of the Wedding Reception & Receiving Line?
The wedding reception is often a time and place to welcome and greet the guest who has travelled a long way to be with you. It is also the time & opportunity to introduce the two sides of the family, as some family members could be from a totally different location and look unfamiliar; the wedding reception should enable you to introduce people to one other and make them feel more comfortable around each other.
The formal section of the wedding reception is the receiving line. If at all possible, it would be advantageous for the groom & bride, with their families, to arrive at the wedding reception before everyone else, in order to greet the arriving guests.
Generally, the toastmaster will arrange the receiving line as he/she will know the order in which to place people. The receiving line is not a place to make small chat; it is just an opportunity to meet the groom, bride and family and make a quick courtesy comment (e.g. thanks for the invitation or congratulation of the event).
Traditionally, the order of the receiving line is as follows:
- The Bride’s Mother
- The Bride’s Father
- The Grooms Mother
- The Grooms Father
- The Bride
- The Groom
An Example of the Celebration Meal
Once all the guest has been formally introduced and the greetings have taken place, the toastmaster usually tells people to take a seat. Normally the seating arrangements have been planned out, with name sigh at each table and number to make things a little easier.
Once all the guests are seated, the toastmaster will announce the arrival of the groom & bride and lead them to their table (focal point of the table arrangement) and people will be applauding and standing up during this time. The groom & bride, their parents, best man, maiden of honor and brides maid are to be seated close to each other. Once the groom & bride have sat down, it is usually a cue for all the other guest to also sit down. If grace or an opening statement wants to be said, the best time to say it is before the groom & bride take a sit and the celebration meal begins.
Once all the main meals and desert have been completed, the toastmaster will announce the cutting of the cake and the guest are invited to take photos. Traditionally, the first slice of the cake should be cut by the bride & groom, & then the division of the rest of the cake is performed by the catering staff and served to the guest with coffee (or any other beverage the guest would like).
